JPK9 Academy Dog Training

Is Board and Train Worth It? Boarding and Training Pros and Cons From a Trainer Who Offers Both

Sending your dog away for a few weeks is a big step. It costs more than lessons, and you won’t see most of the training happen. So it’s fair to ask if it’s worth it.

Juan Portillo has trained dogs for more than 15 years at JPK9 Academy in Elk Grove. He runs board and train, and he also teaches private lessons. So the answer here isn’t always “book board and train.” Sometimes it’s lessons. Sometimes it’s something else. This guide walks through how to tell.

Quick answer

Board and train is worth it if your dog needs daily practice that you can’t give right now, and you’re willing to learn the handoff lessons and keep the same rules at home after. It’s not worth it if you want a “fixed” dog with no work on your side, or if the main problem only happens when you leave the house. At JPK9 Academy, it costs $3,200 to $5,500.

What Is Board and Train for Dogs?

Your dog stays with the trainer for a few weeks and trains every day. You’ll also hear it called boarding and training, training and boarding, dog board and train or a training camp. It’s the same idea: the dog learns first, then the trainer teaches you.

A normal day in JPK9 Academy’s program looks like this:

  1. Potty break, then breakfast
  2. Rest in a shaded kennel of their own. Dogs never share a kennel
  3. A walk, then 3 to 4 short training sessions through the day, at the Elk Grove facility or a local park
  4. Some days, Juan takes dogs along to in-home lessons so they practice in new places
  5. Evenings in the dog room, each dog in its own crate
  6. On hot days, they stay inside with air conditioning and indoor playpens

You get a video update every 5 to 7 days, so you can see how your dog is doing. In the second half of the program, you come in for handoff lessons and learn the same cues your dog has been learning. After your dog goes home, there’s a follow-up session and group classes in Elk Grove to practice around other dogs.

Does Board and Train Actually Work?

Yes, but only if two things happen. Your dog gets enough good practice, and you keep the same rules once your dog is home. The program takes care of the first part. The second part is yours.

This is where most board and train goes wrong. The dog comes home sitting and walking nicely, then a few weeks later it’s back on the couch, pulling on walks and bolting out the door. Not because the training didn’t work, but because the house went back to the old rules.

That’s why JPK9 Academy doesn’t just hand your dog back. The handoff lessons, the follow-up session and the group classes are there so you know exactly what to do, and the training still holds a month later.

Boarding and Training Pros and Cons: The Honest Tradeoffs

Each good side has a catch. Most of them are easy to manage if you know about them before you book.

Where it helpsWhere it falls short
Daily practice. 3 to 4 sessions a day, every day. Hard to match at home. You’re not there for most of it, so the handoff lessons really matter.
A fresh start. A new routine away from the habits your dog practices at home. Some dogs take a few days to settle in.
Experienced hands for pulling, jumping, not listening and reactivity. It costs more up front than a few lessons.
Works with a busy schedule. No weekly lessons to fit in.If nothing changes at home, results fade.
Real-world practice in parks and new places, not just a backyard.Trainers vary a lot, so pick carefully.

What Will My Dog Learn in Board and Train?

Most dogs work on the basics that make daily life easier: sit, down, stay, coming when called, walking on a loose leash, going to their bed or place, calm crate time and waiting at doors. Dogs in the 4 to 5 week program get extra time for harder goals like reactivity or off-leash work.

Every dog’s plan is different. Juan sets the goals with you at the evaluation, based on what your dog actually does at home and on walks.

Does Board and Train Work for Your Dog’s Problem?

It’s great for some problems and not the right fit for others. Here’s how it usually breaks down.

Your dog’s problemGood fit?Why
Pulling, jumping, counter surfing, door dashing, ignoring you outsideUsually a strong fitThese dogs need lots of practice in real places, and that’s what a training stay gives them. The 3 to 4 week program covers most of them.
Reactive dogs that bark or lunge at dogs or peopleOften a good fitReactive dogs get better with lots of calm reps around the things that set them off. The 4 to 5 week program gives more time for that, and the handoff lessons matter even more.
Growling, snapping or a bite historyCase by case, after an evaluationJuan evaluates every aggression case first. Serious cases can do aggression board and train, where the dog lives in Juan’s home for 6 to 8 weeks. Others start with aggression training lessons.
Resource guarding (food, toys, spaces)Case by caseIt depends on how bad it is and who it’s aimed at. Juan looks first, and may suggest behavior modification at home, since that’s where the guarding happens.
Separation anxietyUsually not the first choiceThe problem happens when you leave your home. A training stay can’t copy that moment, so working on it at home with behavior modification is usually the better start.
PuppiesCan be a good fitA puppy program gets potty, crate and manners routines going early. Some young puppies do better with lessons at home plus group classes.

A lot of dogs have more than one of these. The evaluation is where Juan figures out what to work on first. Read more about behavior modification and aggression training.

Is Board and Train Cruel? Do Dogs Feel Abandoned?

No, board and train isn’t cruel by itself. Your dog gets a steady routine and a lot of attention for a few weeks. Whether it’s a good experience comes down to the trainer, the methods and how the dogs are cared for.

Dogs don’t think “my family left me.” What they notice is a new routine. Some dogs eat a little less or are restless the first night or two. Once the days get predictable, they settle in.

Ask every trainer about methods, and ask straight out about shock collars and prong collars. JPK9 Academy uses positive reinforcement with clear structure and daily routines. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based training too. A good trainer will answer this without dodging.

Then ask about care. At JPK9, Juan trains every dog himself, each dog has its own kennel and crate, and you see your dog on video every 5 to 7 days.

Will My Dog Still Love Me After Board and Train?

Yes. A few weeks away doesn’t erase the bond you’ve built. Your dog knows who its family is.

What changes is how your dog listens. During the program, your dog learns to respond to Juan. The handoff lessons teach your dog that the same cues work with you. Life usually gets easier after, because walks stop being a fight.

What’s the Best Age for Board and Train?

There’s no single best age. Puppies learn fast, but they also need time with their family and safe early socializing. Adult dogs learn well too, even older dogs with old habits.

JPK9 offers Puppy Board and Train for $3,200. For puppies 8 weeks to 6 months, there’s also Puppy Private Training for $1,300: 4 private lessons at home plus 5 group classes. If your puppy is very young, ask on the free call which one fits and what the age and vaccine rules are. If you’re starting at home, the crate training guide helps with the first nights.

Board and Train vs Private Lessons: Which Fits Your Dog?

Juan does both, so this is really about your dog and your schedule.

Board and train usually fits when

  • You can’t practice several times a week right now
  • The problems show up mostly outside: on walks, at the park, around other dogs
  • You want faster progress and can make the handoff lessons at the end
  • Your dog needs a break from habits the whole house keeps feeding

Private lessons usually fit when

  • The problem happens mostly at home, or when you leave
  • You want to learn alongside your dog from day one
  • You can practice between lessons
  • You’d rather spread the cost and the work over a few weeks

Private lessons with JPK9 start at $1,300 for 4 lessons at your home or a nearby park. See private dog training lessons.

Questions to Ask Before You Book Any Board and Train

Ask these to any trainer, JPK9 included. A good one won’t mind.

  1. Who trains my dog every day? Some programs use assistants. Ask for a name.
  2. Where does my dog sleep, and does it share space with other dogs?
  3. How many dogs are in the program at once? That tells you how much one-on-one time your dog gets.
  4. Can I see where my dog will stay? You want clean, calm and organized.
  5. What tools do you use? Ask about shock collars and prong collars by name.
  6. How often will I get updates? Videos show more than texts.
  7. What if my dog isn’t making progress? You want to hear a plan, not a promise.
  8. What do the handoff lessons cover, and how many are there?
  9. What help do I get after pickup?
  10. Do you guarantee results? Nobody can guarantee behavior. If a trainer promises a perfect dog, be careful.

More Questions About Board and Train

How effective is board and train?

Very effective for building new habits fast, because the dog practices 3 to 4 times a day, every day, with an experienced trainer. It works best for obedience, leash pulling and reactivity. How long it lasts depends on whether you keep the same rules and cues at home.

Is board and train good for puppies?

It can be. A puppy board and train program sets up potty, crate and manners routines before bad habits start. Very young puppies often do better with private lessons at home plus group classes. At JPK9 Academy, Puppy Board and Train is $3,200.

Is board and train good for separation anxiety?

Usually not as the first step. Separation anxiety happens when a dog is left alone at home, and a training stay can’t recreate that. Behavior modification with work at home is usually a better start. An in-person evaluation shows which approach fits.

How long is a board and train program?

At JPK9 Academy, most programs are 3 to 4 weeks ($3,200) or 4 to 5 weeks ($4,200). Aggression board and train is 6 to 8 weeks ($5,500). There’s no 2-week program, because dogs need the extra weeks for new habits to stick.

What should I pack for board and train?

Usually your dog’s regular food, any medications or supplements, a collar with ID tags and current vaccination records. Juan sends the exact list for JPK9’s program when you book.

What should I do after my dog comes home from board and train?

Use the same cues and house rules from your handoff lessons, practice a few minutes a day and go to the group classes. The first few weeks matter most. Don’t let old habits like door dashing or jumping on guests creep back in.
