Quick answer

What Is Dog Obedience Training?

Dog obedience training teaches a dog to respond reliably to everyday cues like sit, down, stay, come and loose-leash walking, at home and around real distractions. At JPK9 Academy, Sacramento dog owners can start with private lessons at home or at a local park, or with board and train in Elk Grove. Both include Sunday group classes, where dogs practice those cues around other dogs and people.

What your dog learns

Obedience Commands Your Dog Will Learn

Obedience is not a list of tricks. Each skill solves a real problem owners deal with every day.

SkillWhat it means in daily life
Sit, down and stayYour dog holds a position at the door, at the vet, or while you eat.
Recall (come)Your dog comes back when called, even when something more interesting is around.
Loose-leash walkingWalks without being dragged toward every dog, squirrel or person.
HeelYour dog stays at your side in busy places. See how to teach a dog to heel.
PlaceYour dog goes to a bed or cot and settles there until released.
Impulse controlLess jumping on guests, door darting and grabbing things.
Focus and engagementYour dog checks in with you instead of tuning you out.

How it works

How Obedience Training Works at JPK9 Academy

  1. Free phone consultation. You talk with Juan about your dog, your goals and which program fits.
  2. Training starts. Private lessons at your home or a local park, or daily training during board and train.
  3. You learn the handling too. Juan teaches you every technique he uses, and you get homework between sessions.
  4. Group classes. Your dog practices obedience around other dogs and people at Sunday group classes in Elk Grove.
  5. Progress based on your dog. Juan moves each dog forward when it is ready, not after a fixed number of weeks. Off-leash work comes only when the dog shows it is ready.

Real-world obedience

Listens at Home, Ignores You Outside?

Most dogs that "know" commands at home fall apart outside because they have never practiced them around distractions. A dog that sits perfectly in the kitchen has not learned to sit next to a jogger on a trail, a dog across the street, or a crowd at a weekend market. Obedience becomes reliable only when it is practiced in new places, a little harder each time.

Problem owners call aboutWhat it looks likeHow obedience training helps
Pulling on the leashYour dog drags you on neighborhood walks or busy trails.Loose-leash walking and heel, practiced first at home, then in busier places.

Basic vs advanced

Basic or Advanced Obedience: Which Does Your Dog Need?

Basic obedience

For puppies and dogs that do not yet respond reliably to sit, down, stay, come and leash walking. Most dogs start here, including adult dogs. Puppies can start at home from day one. See when to start training a puppy and puppy training.

Advanced obedience

For dogs that already know the basics but need them to hold up with heavy distractions, at longer distances or off leash in controlled settings. Read more on advanced obedience in Sacramento.

Is your dog reactive or aggressive? Obedience helps, but it is not the whole answer. Reactive or aggressive dogs are evaluated one by one, and Juan may recommend private lessons or aggression training before a group class.

The Trainer Behind JPK9

Juan Portillo

Founder and Head Trainer, JPK9 Academy

Sacramento owners who call JPK9 reach Juan directly, and he is the same person who trains their dog. In obedience lessons he works next to the owner, not behind the scenes.

With more than 15 years in dog training, Juan teaches you every technique he uses so the results last after the lessons end. That is why private lessons include owner coaching and a homework plan, and why owners take part in every group class.

Juan runs JPK9 with his wife Sarah, who keeps the facility side organized while Juan handles the training sessions and every call about your dog.

What Owners Say About JPK9 Obedience Training

★★★★★

"When we got Frankie, we couldn't get him to listen to us. After Board and Train he came back such a good boy. Now he can walk nicely, sit and stay, and recall. Juan trained me to keep it up, and we attend weekly trainings that keep us both well trained."

Syd Ney · Google review

★★★★★

"My dog had real challenges before training: leash reactivity, being a little too aggressive toward others, and major recall issues. Since working with Juan, the improvement has been incredible. The one-on-one sessions are focused and effective, and the group sessions have been amazing for helping my dog socialize in a safe, controlled environment."

Nestor Alejandro · Google review

★★★★★

"We enrolled our Belgian Malinois puppy, Vander, in Board and Train at 10 months old, and Juan and Sarah made the whole process seamless. After just three weeks, he came home with tremendous growth in manners, focus, and behavior. Their Sunday training sessions have built a community of dog owners that feels like family."

Sacramento Owners Ask

Dog Obedience Training Questions Sacramento Owners Ask

How much does dog obedience training cost in Sacramento?
At JPK9 Academy, obedience training starts at $1,300 for 4 private lessons plus 5 group lessons. Private Training Pro is $3,000 for 8 private lessons. Board and train starts at $3,200 for 3 to 4 weeks and $4,200 for 4 to 5 weeks. The phone consultation is free.
How long does dog obedience training take?
Programs at JPK9 run from 4 private lessons to a 5-week board and train, plus 5 group sessions. Basic cues often improve within the first few sessions, but reliability around distractions takes longer and depends on daily practice at home.
What are the basic dog obedience commands?
The core commands are sit, down, stay, come (recall), loose-leash walking and place. Heel, impulse control and focus build on those once the basics are solid.
Can I sign up for group obedience classes only?
Not as a first step. At JPK9, group classes open up after a private lesson course or a board and train program, and 5 group lessons are included. After those, drop-in sessions are $25 each.
Where does obedience training happen for Sacramento dogs?
Private lessons happen at your home in Sacramento or at a local park near you. Group classes are held in Elk Grove on Sunday mornings, and the location is shared at enrollment. During board and train, dogs stay and train with Juan in Elk Grove.
Is my dog too old for obedience training?
No. Adult and senior dogs can learn obedience. An older dog may need more repetition to replace habits it has practiced for years, but the training process is the same.
What age can a puppy start obedience training?
Training at home can start the day your puppy comes home. Group classes need a first round of shots plus Bordetella. See when to start training a puppy.
Is board and train or private lessons better for obedience?
Board and train is faster because your dog trains every day, which suits busy owners. Private lessons cost less and teach you to handle your dog from the start. Both include group classes. Compare them in board and train vs private lessons.
Do I need to take part in the training?
Yes. Owners join every group session, private lessons coach you alongside your dog, and board and train ends with an owner handoff session. Results last when the owner keeps them up at home.
Will my dog be able to listen off leash?
Off-leash work is introduced only when Juan sees the dog is ready, not at a set session number. The 4 to 5 week board and train includes off-leash reliability in controlled settings.
Why does my dog listen at home but not outside?
Because it has only practiced at home. Dogs do not automatically carry a cue into new places, so obedience has to be practiced with more distractions step by step, such as in a group class.
Can obedience training help a reactive or aggressive dog?
It helps, but it is usually not enough on its own. Reactive or aggressive dogs are evaluated one by one, and Juan may recommend private lessons or aggression training before a group class.
What is the difference between basic and advanced obedience?
Basic obedience teaches the core cues. Advanced obedience makes those cues hold up with heavy distractions, at a distance and off leash in controlled settings.
