Understanding the Difference

Aggression and Reactivity Are Not Always the Same

A dog that barks, lunges, or reacts strongly is not automatically showing the same type or severity of aggression. The difference matters when determining the right training approach.

Reactivity

  • Intense barking or lunging at triggers
  • Difficulty disengaging from stimuli
  • Over-arousal around dogs or people
  • Pulling hard on leash toward triggers
  • Barking at movement, sounds, strangers

Aggressive Behavior

  • Snapping or biting
  • Threatening posture or sustained growling
  • Guarding food, space, or objects
  • Repeated aggressive incidents
  • Bite history toward people or animals

Not sure which category your dog falls into? Call JPK9 Academy, we'll help you figure out the right approach for your dog.

Can an Aggressive Dog Join Group Training?

Not every dog with aggression or significant reactivity should start in a group class. JPK9 Academy evaluates each case individually. Depending on the dog’s history, severity, and behavior, a private training program or behavior-focused approach may be the right starting point before group training is considered.

If you’re considering group obedience classes for a reactive or aggressive dog, Contact Us so we can figure out the right starting point together.

Our Process

Every Case Starts With an Evaluation

Before any aggression training begins, JPK9 Academy assesses the dog's behavior to understand the full picture. Training recommendations are based on what is actually observed, not a generic intake form.

1

Behavior History

What has happened before? When did the behavior start and how has it developed over time?

2

Triggers

What causes the behavior? People, other dogs, food, space, handling, or specific situations?

3

Severity

How intense is the behavior? What does the dog do and how quickly does it escalate?

4

Bite History

Has a bite occurred? Under what circumstances and what happened after?

5

Environment

Where does the behavior happen? At home, on walks, around strangers, or in specific locations?

6

Owner Goals

What does the family need the dog to safely do? What does a successful outcome actually look like?

Questions?

Dog Aggression Training Frequently Asked Questions

Straightforward answers to the questions Sacramento and Elk Grove dog owners ask most before reaching out.

Can aggressive dogs really be trained?

Yes. Many dogs can make meaningful behavioral progress with an individualized plan. The right approach depends on the dog's history, triggers, severity, and safety needs. JPK9 Academy evaluates each case to determine what's realistic and which program fits the situation.

Can a reactive dog attend group obedience classes?

Not every reactive or aggressive dog should start in a group class. JPK9 Academy evaluates each case individually and may recommend private training or a behavior-focused program first. Reach out before enrolling a reactive dog in group classes.

What should I do if my dog has a bite history?

Call JPK9 Academy directly to discuss the bite history, circumstances, and current behavior. Every case with a bite history is evaluated individually before any program is recommended. Call (916) 571-0157 for an honest conversation about your dog's situation.

What causes aggressive behavior in dogs?

Aggression can stem from fear, pain, resource guarding instincts, territorial behavior, lack of socialization, past experiences, or frustration. Identifying the underlying cause is part of JPK9 Academy's evaluation process because the cause influences the training approach.

How long does dog aggression training take?

There's no single timeline. Training length depends on the dog's behavior, history, severity, environment, and consistency of practice between sessions. No two aggression cases follow exactly the same timeline. JPK9 Academy will be honest about what to expect for your dog's specific situation.

How much does dog aggression training cost in Sacramento?

Aggression training starts at $1,300 for the Starter package (4 private sessions) and $3,000 for the Pro package (8 private sessions). For severe aggression cases, the Board and Train program starts at $5,500 for a 6 to 8 week residential program. Call (916) 571-0157 to discuss which program fits your situation.

What is the aggression board and train program?

The aggression board and train is a 6 to 8 week residential program designed for severe aggression cases. During the program, your dog lives in Juan's home. Not a kennel or facility. Training is incorporated throughout the dog's entire day including structured obedience, impulse control, controlled exposure to distractions, and real household environment work. Not every aggression case is accepted. Evaluation is required before enrollment. Starting at $5,500.

Is aggression training safe for my dog?

Yes. JPK9 Academy uses structured, humane training methods with safety as the top priority. Every aggression case begins with an evaluation to establish appropriate safety protocols before training starts. Dogs are never placed in situations that exceed their current training level.

Do you train dogs that are aggressive toward other dogs?

Yes. Dog-to-dog aggression is one of the most common cases JPK9 Academy works with. Each case is evaluated individually to determine whether private lessons, behavior modification, or a board and train program is the right approach.

Do you work with dogs aggressive toward people?

Yes. Human-directed aggression is taken seriously at JPK9 Academy. Every case involving aggression toward people begins with a thorough evaluation of history, triggers, and severity before any program is recommended.
